Hi friends.
As many of you know, I became a Progressive in graduate school in 2005.
However, I still get Republican mailers. I have tried so hard to get off their
lists, but they just keep sending them. And they want my money to help fund their insanity. That's just crazy.
Well, I got two unwelcome mailers today at once.
More below the fold:
Now, I consider Focus on the Family and the Family Research Council very dangerous organizations. The Family Research Council sent me a mailer today. This mailer was labeled: Stop the Obama Plan to Fire Discipline, or Silence Christians.
Wow - we are going to persecute Christians at work ! Whatever could they be referring to ? These people clearly need help (in more than one way - lol) !
They asked Texas voters (whom they believe are Republicans) to Affirm the following statement to Senators Hutchison and Cornyn :
I'm voicing my opposition to legislation such as the ENDA that misues federal power to trample the speech and religious liberties of employees and businesses. ENDA would force millions of employers and employees to violate their consciences and damage their livelihoods by ordering them to affirm behavior they consider to be unhealthy and morally wrong. ...
Signed ....
In their letter they write:
Dear Friend,
Should Washington liberals force a Christian bookstore to hire a man who dresses in women's clothing ?
Should Washington liberals force your child's religious school to hire homosexual instructors ?
Should Washington liberals force your employer to fire you for "anti-gay harassment" for simply keeping a Bible on your desk ?
They underlined force in their letter.
That this won't happen I guess is a mere detail.
Then, they cite an example: Jon and Elaine Huguenin whom they say were fined for not wanting to photograph a lesbian couple.
Just one minor problem. ENDA hasn't passed. So, this was not due to ENDA, a fact that is missed by almost all of their readers.
They urge you to donate various amounts.
For $50, the prize is a pamphlet entitled, "Homosexuality in Your Child's School and Why You should be Involved: A Biblical Case for Social and Political Involvement".
Think it doesn't affect people who aren't GLBT ? I am not a member of that group. But, eventually, they will come to everyone's door who is not a WASP fundamentalist. They will get to you. We all stand or fall together.
ENDA
The Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) is a proposed bill in the United States Congress that would prohibit discrimination against employees on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity for civilian nonreligious employers with over 15 employees.
That is it in a nutshell.
Most proponents of the law intend it to address cases where gay, lesbian and/or transgender employees have been discriminated against by their employer because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Currently, these employees are unable to find protection in the courts because sexual orientation is not considered to be a suspect class by the federal courts and by many U.S. states. Proponents argue that such a law is appropriate in light of the United States Constitution's guarantees of equal protection and due process to all. Advocates argue that homosexuality is not a "choice" but a personal identity, a claim supported by the American Psychology Association (APA), and that all working people have a right to be judged by the quality of their work performance and not by completely unrelated factors.[36] According to a study published in 2001 by the Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law, reports of discrimination based on sexual orientation are roughly equal to those on race or gender.[37] The APA also states that there is significant discrimination against homosexuals in the workforce. [36] There are also studies showing that local anti-discrimination laws are ineffective, and federal law is needed.[38]
Cost estimates from the Congressional Budget Office from 2002 show that the EEOC estimated that their complaint caseload would rise by only 5 to 7%.[39] Regarding constitutionality, the act incorporates language similar to that of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964[16] which has consistently been upheld by the Courts.
If one is not allowed to be gender biased in the workplace, that does not mean that one is being persecuted.
I may republish this tomorrow morning for more viewers.
